NYBA Board Member Profile: Kern Dillard

We're excited to launch a new feature, profiling new NYBA Board Members. To kick it off, we're profiling Kern Dillard, who joined the NYBA Board in January 2026, and will serve through 2028.

NYBA Board Member Spotlight:
Kern Dillard - Victory Boat Sales
Yacht Broker | USCG Master Captain | Director, NYBA Board of Directors

How long have you worked in the boating industry / how did you get started?

I entered the marine industry after a long career in automotive repair and service, where I owned and operated a repair business for over two decades. That background gave me a strong foundation in systems, diagnostics, business operations and customer service.

I transitioned into boating by working with Freedom Boat Club, helping build out service and fleet management systems. From there, I moved into yacht and boat sales, where I now focus on helping buyers and sellers navigate transactions with clarity and confidence.

Today, I combine hands-on mechanical understanding, real-world boating experience, and a disciplined sales process to guide clients through what is often a major lifestyle purchase.

What is the main focus of Victory Boat Sales?

Victory Boat Sales specializes in late-model, well-maintained brokerage boats, primarily sourced from professionally managed fleets and experienced owners.

Our focus is simple:

Present clean, properly serviced boats

Educate buyers so they can make informed decisions

Structure transactions that close smoothly

We aim to remove uncertainty from the process and replace it with transparency and trust.

What is your favorite part of working in the boating industry?

Being able to guide buyers through boat purchase process and then seeing them step into ownership of their dream. The most rewarding part of the job is he moment when a buyer shifts from uncertainty to confidence.

What are you most excited about on the horizon in the recreational marine industry?

I see a continued shift toward more informed buyers and higher expectations around transparency.

That’s a positive change.

As an industry, we have an opportunity to elevate standards better presentation, stronger communication, and more structured transactions. Brokers who lean into professionalism and education will stand out.

At the same time, demand for accessible boating and step-up cruising opportunities continues to grow, especially here in the Pacific Northwest.

Favorite boating memory

Running out early, watching the sunrise on Puget Sound, glass water, no wind, and a salmon tugging on the line.

Those are the moments that remind you why people invest in boating in the first place.

Broker-to-Broker Referrals

I actively work with buyers and sellers throughout the Pacific Northwest and handle a significant number of out-of-area and remote transactions.

If you have:

Buyers relocating into the Northwest

Clients looking to step into trailerable or mid-size cruising boats

Listings that need additional exposure or a cooperative sales approach

I’m always open to collaborating and structuring deals that work well for everyone involved.

My goal in every transaction is simple: clear communication, clean paperwork, and a smooth path to closing.
Thank you to Kern, for participating in our NYBA Board of Directors Member Spotlight!

Victory Boat Sales

Over the past few years, I have built a reputation for integrity, transparency, and a genuine passion for helping people confidently access their life dreams on the water. I work daily with buyers, sellers, marinas, surveyors, lenders, and service providers, giving me a well-rounded understanding of the challenges brokers face in today’s market.

Having come into boat sales after a lengthy career as an automotive repair business owner, I bring both proven operational and customer-service expertise and the advantage of an outside perspective. Being new to this industry allows me to see opportunities for improvement, innovation, and member support often overlooked by those who have spent decades in the same systems. My background, my skills in problem solving, negotiation, and building efficient processes all directly enhance my work in yacht and boat sales.

The Northwest Yacht Brokers Association plays a vital leadership role in elevating professional standards, supporting broker education, and advocating for the growth and health of our industry. As the boating landscape continues to evolve, our association’s guidance and unity are more important than ever.

I have seen firsthand how boating brings families together, strengthens community, and creates lifelong memories. It would be an honor to serve on the NYBA Board and help advance the industry that has given me and my clients so much. My commitment is to contribute a fresh, constructive, and forward-thinking viewpoint that supports a stronger, more unified brokerage community throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Kern Dillard
Victory Boat Sales / Freedom Boat Club

Paul Groesbeck
Irwin Yacht Sales

I have had the pleasure of serving on the NYBA Board of Directors for the past nine years, most recently as President for the past five years. I am also proud to co-chair the Ethics Committee. I am looking forward to my upcoming last year as President, and then moving in to my tenure of Past President. NYBA is an essential part of our broker/dealer network in producing our boat shows, ethics committee, CPYB and government affairs. I would encourage any member to take advantage of running for the Board in our future elections. Our goal as Board Members and Executive Committee members is to listen to membership and make decisions that will benefit all involved. I would appreciate your vote to continue my service on the NYBA Board. Thank you.

NW Yachtnet

Thank you fellow NYBA Members for considering my candidacy for your Board of Directors. I have been working in our industry since 1986 as an associate, broker, and owner with my company Port Orchard Yacht Sales until closing the doors in 2021. I am now working with the team at NW Yachtnet.

Through hundreds of changes over the last four decades in our industry, the economy, consumer perception and confidence, one constant remained a reliable and dependable source of reference and guidance, NYBA. NYBA has been a trusted hand on the wheel to hold course and adjust when necessary. We can be very proud of the quality and commitment of our past board of directors, presidents and all of our supporting staff. The strength and integrity of this organization depends on the commitment and participation of the entire membership. My commitment to this organization and its members has brought me to realize it's time to elevate my commitment to a position with the board of directors. I hereby submit my candidacy for your consideration.

Waterline Boats

After speaking with a few of the current and retiring Board members (whom I respect for their years of dedication!), I am looking forward to the opportunity to become a member of the Board of Directors.

I believe my professional (past and present) and volunteer experiences qualify me to be a strong, contributing member of the BOD:

· I have been a member of NYBA for 10 years.

· To expand my educational opportunities and continued professional development, I qualified for the CPYB designation in 2020.

· I pursued, received (and currently hold), a 100-ton Near Coastal Captain license in 2022.

· I have been a member of the NYBA Boats Afloat Show committee.

· I am an active member with the Everett Yacht Club and the EYC delegate to RBAW.

· I have been a small private business owner in Washington State.

I was motivated to become a yacht broker while experiencing the process of buying and selling our personal boats. I joined Waterline Boats, LLC in late 2014 and am proud to be the manager of the Waterline Boats office at the Port of Everett.

I enjoy working with our NYBA members; I appreciate the professionalism and integrity of our membership and look forward to supporting the ongoing work of NYBA.

Thank you for your consideration!

Greetings NYBA Members,

Thank you for reviewing my candidate statement for the NYBA Elections. I am running to extend my current three-year term as a Board Director and to continue in my capacity on the Executive Committee as this organization's Treasurer, which began in January 2025.

That said, I would like to offer a special acknowledgment to our outgoing Treasurer, Kevin Blake. You set a high standard and I appreciate your many years of service to this organization.

As a brief update, I am about to begin my 11th year as a Dealer/Broker in the PNW Marine Industry. As of April 2024, I have been with Seattle Yachts - PNW, working out of their Shilshole Bay Marina Office. I feel well-established in this industry and remain highly motivated by the rewarding relationships I have fostered with industry experts and by helping clients find that "Perfect Boat."

One key point and thing I have learned during my tenure on NYBA’s current Board is the value of history, knowledge and continuity which is the big reason for me to volunteer again.

In closing, I appreciate your consideration and continued support of an endorsement. I am eager for the opportunity to contribute and serve NYBA, their Mission Statement and Goals for another three-year term as a Board Member and year as Treasurer on the Executive Committee.

New Three-Day Format Announced for Spring Boats Afloat Show

The Spring Boats Afloat Show is moving to a new three-day format for 2025! The dates will be Friday, April 25th through Sunday, April 27th, with a VIP event on Thursday, April 24th. Show hours and VIP hours will be shared closer to the event (but will follow the same - or similar - format as prior events).

This decision was made after multiple exhibitor surveys, conversations with various stakeholders, Boat Show Committee meetings, and buy-in from the Board of Directors. Our goal is to create a dynamic, three-day event that spans the most popular days for attendance. Thursdays have always been our least-attended day. While we do recognize that some exhibitors find a 'quiet' Thursday to be conducive to business, we think there are still plenty of opportunities to have one-on-one time with your clients during the new three-day format.

We also recognize that the majority of your show costs are 'fixed', regardless of the length of the show - which is true from a show production side, as well. However, we do see some cost-saving potential on exhibitors' lodging, meals and travel/parking expenses, as well as temporary staff costs.

We look forward to trying out this new format for the Spring Boats Afloat Show! We currently do NOT have plans to change the Fall Boats Afloat Show - it will remain a four-day show, happening September 11-14, 2025. And of course, we will evaluate the success of the three-day format after this year's Spring show, to decide if we move forward with the format at future Spring shows.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the Boats Afloat Show - we look forward to our biggest Spring Boats Afloat Show yet. Exhibitor contracts will be available in late January!

NYBA Announces New "Excellence in Volunteer Service" Award

NYBA Vice President Tony Witek announced a new service award at the 2024 NYBA Annual Meeting on November 19th. The new NYBA Excellence in Volunteer Service Award was created to honor and recognize a NYBA member for their outstanding contribution to the growth and success of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association.

The inaugural recipient of the NYBA Excellence in Volunteer Service Award is Harry Walp, CPYB & NYBA Past President. Harry has served on the NYBA Board of Directors for over a decade, and was first elected to the Board in 2011 while working as a Yacht Broker at Grand Banks Northwest. In 2013, he was elected to the Executive Committee as Treasurer, and served six years in that role, guiding the organization through sensitive financial speedbumps. Following his years as Treasurer, Harry was elected in 2019 as President of NYBA. During his term, he was faced with the daunting task of guiding the organization through the possible loss of South Lake Union as the site for the Boats Afloat Show. While that thankfully did not come to pass, Harry dedicated countless hours to helping the Board find a new location for the Boats Afloat Show – the financial lifeblood of the organization.

Since the end of his term as President, Harry has continued to dedicate his time as Past President from 2021 through 2024. His thorough analyses and legacy knowledge have provided invaluable support and guidance to NYBA.

The Board of Directors thanks Harry for his tireless service to NYBA and the Pacific Northwest professional yacht broker community.

Congratulations, Harry, on being NYBA’s inaugural recipient of the NYBA Excellence in Volunteer Service Award!

Bristol Yachts Northwest

I offer my time and service to help NYBA promote the needs of our organization.

The Marine industry has been my lifelong career. I have been an active member of NYBA for decades. Having supported various boards including the advisory board at my local marina, current member of the board in the building where my office is located, and participated in the NYBA Boat Show and Grow Boating committees, I feel that I would be a positive asset.

Through my career I have participated in numerous boats shows in a variety of states and countries. I have seen what works and what doesn't, as well as what NYBA has tried in the past. I can share these experiences to improve the organization and our shows.

Thanks for your consideration.

Diego Gomez Hall
Worth Avenue Yachts

As a yacht broker with more than 20 years of industry experience, I have had the opportunity to help clients experience the freedom and joy of being on the water, and build skills and connections to inspire confidence onboard their yachts.

My passion and dedication to the industry has enabled me to live and work internationally from Australia, to Monaco, and all over the US, working in all aspects of the industry from sailing to superyachts, and hospitality to maintenance. I enjoy gaining a holistic view of the industry and I find my clients appreciate this perspective. I pride myself on the relationships I’ve developed within the yachting community, enabling me to assemble the best possible team to cover every expertise to support my clients.

My approach to yacht sales is founded in my core values: doing the right thing is always the right thing, innovation is necessary and good, knowledge is power, and relationships are everything.

As a Director of NYBA I would like to bring a global perspective from the next generation of industry professionals, and encourage engagement, innovation, transparency, and camaraderie. In turn I hope to further cement NYBA’s role in providing our clients with better service, value, education, and confidence in our industry.

Thank you for your consideration and please take some time to learn more about me at www.diegogomezhall.com/about-diego.

Gretchen Miles
Waterline Boats

My history with yachts and boats began years ago. First, with a restored Sterling waterski boat; progressively growing and embracing the lifestyle from smaller weekend recreational boats to our current 2003 Jefferson 64 Pilothouse which I live aboard with my husband, Ron, and dog, Gracie.

I was motivated to become a yacht broker while experiencing the process of buying and selling our personal boats and began working with Waterline Boats, LLC in late 2014. Currently, I am also the manager of the Waterline Boats office at the Port of Everett.

To expand my opportunities and continued professional development, I qualified for the CPYB designation in 2020 and I received my 100-ton Captain license in 2022.

I am a member of the NYBA Boats Afloat Show committee and an active member with the Everett Yacht Club.

I believe I will contribute to and help elevate our organization by sharing our goals of professionalism, integrity, transparency and education. Our professional organization is growing; I have passion, perspective, and possess good leadership skills.

Thank you for your consideration!

Amy Thornton
BananaBelt Boats

I’ve grown up on the waters here in the Northwest – I've dented my share of docks in Lake Washington as a teenager and there are at least three fishing poles marking the way from Shilshole to Rosario Resort compliments of yours truly. My dad started selling boats right after I was born which is probably why I think you’re a weirdo if the thought of smelling fresh fiberglass in the Kingdome doesn’t get you hot and bothered.

I’m the owner of BananaBelt Boats in Anacortes – a company my parents started 25 years ago. Our set-up and philosophy is different from typical yacht brokerages (I’m sure our name gives that away) with about 100 boats out of the water. We move a few boats up here. I love selling boats more than I love carbohydrates. I suck at docking a boat, but I will sell my soul to make a customer happy (and contrary to popular belief, some redheads really do have souls).

I’ve loved being a voice on NYBA’s Board of Directors this past term – while my language is colorful, I think my perspective is too. I’m one of the few female business owners in the marine industry, and I‘m not shy about sharing my opinions - I'm all about the exchange of ideas to help make NYBA better for its members.

It would be a privilege to continue in this role so I can help foster the idea that this organization is about more than putting on a boat show – it's about supporting each other in this industry and building relationships that help us become better at what we do.

One last thing you should know about me: I firmly believe that if everyone had a pilothouse and a bottle of wine, we’d have world peace.

NYBA Docks: Investing in an Important (and Expensive!) Asset

By Diane Lander, NYBA Special Events and Membership Coordinator

Following a wild (and unexpected) wind squall during set-up for the Spring 2024 Boats Afloat Show, some of NYBA’s docks suffered considerable damage. Following the show, it was discovered that the welds in a number of places needed serious repair. In addition, the wood on the tops of the docks in many places had long outlived its useful life and was in need of serious repairs.

In August, NYBA engaged Tom Bulson from Fremont Tug and his crew to work on the docks. They went over to Seattle Yacht Club where many of the docks are stored off-season and commenced a repair job which included removal and replacement of much of the rotten decking. Next, they worked on repairing the welds and connections between docks.

By the September show, the docks that Fremont Tug repaired were in much better shape. But many of them are decades old and some are nearing the end of their useful life. After the September Boats Afloat Show, some of the courtesy floats were deemed ‘unrepairable’ and will have to be replaced this winter before the 2025 Spring Boats Afloat show.

Fortunately, NYBA is able to derive a small amount of income from renting out the docks to organizations such as Seafair. The docks are also used by Seattle Yacht Club yearly to make up the “Dock Zero” Guest Dock for the hundreds of visiting boaters who come to Opening Day of Boating every year (in exchange for year-round free storage, except when we are using them).

Our docks are one of NYBA’s biggest assets – but they are also extremely expensive to replace. They are critical to the success of our boat shows which create our largest stream of income. Maintaining them and making sure that they last well into the future until we have to replace them is critical.

Thank you to Tom and his crew from Fremont Tug for everything that they do to help us maintain this critical asset!

Hello!

My name is Audrey Agidius and I am so excited at the opportunity to be your new Boat Show Event Manager for NYBA! Previously I worked as the Office Manager for Ocean Pacific Yachts, our fellow member and neighbors in South Lake Union.

I have spent my entire life in the Pacific Northwest, I grew up in Portland Oregon before moving to Seattle in 2018. My love for boating started young when I spent every summer crabbing and fishing with my dad along the Oregon Coast.

I moved to Seattle to attend the University of Washington and studied Communications & Journalism, where I truly fell in love with this city and all the beauty it has to offer.

Throughout my life I have always had a passion for event planning and management. I have been lucky to practice that passion in my personal life and as an aspect of many of my past positions, but it has always been a specific career that I have aspired to pursue.

I previously played an instrumental role in my former company’s exhibitor participation in many of the Boats Afloat Shows. I believe this previous role will give me a unique and invaluable perspective in this position. The shows have always been my favorite part of the year that I genuinely enjoyed being a part of and look forward to. Seeing the continual success and growth of the show is an honor and a privilege, I am so excited to bring my experience and ideas to the team at NYBA and to the future Boats Afloat Shows!

Please don’t hesitate to contact me – I’m available in the office, by email or by phone. He maintains a Florida Licensed and Bonded Yacht Broker status. He is also a proud family man, busy at home with his wife and daughter, when he isn’t working on making someone’s boating dreams a reality.

Jason Knott
Essential Shipyard Industries

In my two-decade tenure in the marine industry, I've cultivated enduring friendships within the brokerage sector. When the need arose for a brokerage in Friday Harbor, I leveraged these relationships, reaching out to trusted colleagues of decades. Highly recommended by top brokers, NYBA became a cornerstone in my professional journey, providing invaluable insights. This access has enabled me to consistently and successfully contribute to the industry, benefiting both buyers and sellers.

Now, I'm thrilled at the prospect of guiding new brokers, ensuring they uphold the highest industry standards. I am committed to sharing the wealth of experience accumulated over decades within NYBA, fostering a community where seasoned insights are readily available to new members.

My extensive background spans designing electric propulsion systems, academic research, commercial crabbing, and sailing. Alongside my wife Emily, we operate a shipyard service in Friday Harbor, recently expanding to much larger operation in Anacortes. My fourteen-year-old son, Atlas, actively contributes to our family endeavor. I'm eager to bring this rich tapestry of experience to the NYBA Board, contributing to the growth and excellence of our industry.

Thank you for considering my candidacy.

Gretchen Miles
Waterline Boats

My relationship to boating began on my honeymoon…I fell in love! My confidence has grown through several iterations: beginning with a Bayliner 2858 and Mainship 390. Next, we chose a DeFever 49, currently own a Jefferson 64 Pilothouse and have lived aboard for 10 years.

To expand my opportunities and continued professional development, I am a licensed 100 ton Near Coastal Master Captain.

I became motivated to become a yacht broker while experiencing the process of buying and selling our personal boats. I began working with Waterline Boats in late 2014 and am a Certified Professional Yacht Broker. Currently, I am the manager of Waterline Boats newest expansion office located at the Port of Everett. I am a newly minted member of the NYBA Boats Afloat Show committee and an active member with the Everett Yacht Club. Unrelated to the yachting industry, I was a private business owner for 21 years.

I believe I will contribute to and help elevate our organization by sharing our goals of professionalism, integrity, and education. Our professional organization is growing; I have passion, perspective, possess good leadership skills and I have a good sense of humor.

My experience as a Director gives me a very good foundation and understanding of the current state of our organization. This includes the challenges and opportunities that are in front of NYBA. My resume as a business owner both in and outside of the boating industry gives me a broad perspective on the various elements involved in running a successful company. I also feel strongly that NYBA is a broker organization for the betterment of the brokers and dealerships that make up our members. My goal is to always reflect the best interests of our members.

We then settled in California, where I did Sea Scouts (4 Years), sailboat racing, boat deliveries, and more living aboard. After many land-based careers where I gained valuable experiences in service, marketing, and sales, I eventually turned to the boating industry, starting with sailboats and eventually into powerboats, as well. Today I celebrate 13 years as a yacht consultant—including a decade in Seattle at Denison Yachting, and in that role, I try to share and spread the passion I have for the boating world, and guide clients towards a boat that will best fit their needs.

We boaters know that yachting is one of the last remaining options for truly being on your own, or in turn to find yourself opening up to total strangers because you need a spare impeller! I believe NYBA has an important role in shepherding this.

Board of Director Candidate Statements Available

Please take a moment to review the following candidate statements for NYBA Board of Directors candidates in the upcoming election. Voting in the election begins on January 18th and ends on January 27th, and is open to all Business and Business-Individual level members.

Kevin Blake
Irwin Yacht Sales

Hello NYBA Members. I have had the pleasure of being on the Board of Directors for NYBA since 2019 as well as the privilege of being voted Treasurer that same year. The Association has seen a lot of changes since that time and navigating these changes has been challenging. I now have a full understanding of how much work goes into the Association by the employees, the volunteer Board of Directors, and the Association’s vendors and subcontractors. I appreciate the fact that NYBA was designed for the brokers in mind. There are only a few other associations that act on behalf of the brokers, and I am proud to say that I am a member but also the Treasurer of such a world-class association.

During the last years of change, I have found myself navigating every area of the operations of NYBA. This involves budgeting, contracts, committees, financials, office moves, hiring of our new Director of Operations and much more. The positive changes that I have been a part of are exciting and not over. There is a lot of work to be done for the upcoming Boat Shows, Membership Drives, Government Affairs, Grow Boating, Ethics and keeping the Association financially sound. NYBA has a strong Board of Directors, and I would like to continue to be on the board and hopefully serve another term as Treasurer, if I am re-elected.

Paul Groesbeck
Irwin Yacht Sales

I have had the opportunity to be President of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association for the past two years. With my current term expiring, I am running to be re-elected to the Board, with the hope of serving as NYBA’s President again. We have experienced several trying issues, but as a Board have overcome them and are very excited about our current staff and our newest addition Karli Houlé as our Executive Director.

Our second April show is coming soon and we are all excited to continue to build this show. I am looking forward to run for a second term as President and hope for your support, along with other Board members that are pursuing another term in this valuable association.

Ken Monaghan
Swiftsure Yachts

Fellow NYBA Members: My name is Kenneth “Ken” Monaghan and I am currently a Broker for Swiftsure Yachts, working out of our Westlake Ave North Headquarter Office. In mid-February 2023, I’ll have been there three years after coming over from three and one half years at Signature Yachts and two years with JK3 Yacht Sales Seattle Office.

Now, after nine years of being in the Marine Industry, and as a Member of NYBA and CBYB, I admit my career shift from Sales in the Technology Sector and previously as an Engineer in Aerospace has been a good transition for me. I have felt well-received in this industry and the relationships that I have built with industry experts and clients has been rewarding.

However, I think it is time for me, to “pay it forward”. I enjoy supporting organizations that add value to society and have always been someone willing to volunteer for good causes. I believe in NYBA’s Mission and feel I can make a positive impact in assisting to facilitate continued development.

Being able to run for a Board of Directors position is a privilege and I look forward to being able to continue fostering and collaborating within NYBA to continue its growth and success.

Thanks for your consideration and opportunity to serve as a Board Member for NYBA.

Greg Mustari
Pacific Cruising Yachts

As your past Vice-President, I would very much like to remain on the Board of NYBA in a position of a lighter duty role. With over a 20 year history of selling boats and my past law enforcement career, I feel I have a lot to contribute to the Board. As of lately, I’ve had a few health-related bumps in the road but my involvement and unwavering support of NYBA is and has always been important to me. I can’t recall the exact number of years I’ve been on the Board, more than fifteen years, I think. The standards that the NYBA has in place along with the professionals on the Board are what makes this association great.

Tony Witek
Emerald Pacific Yachts

Hello, members of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association. I am Tony Witek, broker at Emerald Pacific Yachts, and I am running to be re-elected to the NYBA Board. If elected, I will be running for the Vice President position. I have been in this industry for many years, and look forward to bringing my years of experience again to benefit our Association. Over my years serving on the NYBA Board, I have served on most of the various committees, and most recently on the Executive Committee as Secretary.

If elected, I will continue to support NYBA through growing our membership and most importantly – by supporting and growing our annual boat shows. Thank you.

Introducing Your New Director of Operations: Karli Houlé

My name is Karli Houlé, and I am so excited at the opportunity to be your new Director of Operations for Northwest Yacht Brokers Association! I have previously been involved in the insurance side of the boating industry, when I worked for Omni Risk Management. The passion of boaters in the Pacific Northwest and the excitement of the Seattle Boats Afloat Show have always been the main reason for me wanting to come back to this industry.

Just a little background on myself; I grew up in the Flathead Valley of Montana, where I developed a love for boating, enjoying recreation on the region’s many freshwater lakes. College brought me to Western Washington University in Bellingham, where I developed a new love that is the Puget Sound! Along with my husband, Justin, and two daughters, Emily (8) and Grace (4), we now enjoy the beautiful summers in Seattle on our own boat.

From the time I was with Omni Risk until now, I have helped grow my family’s residential construction business, All Seasons Development, but have been anxiously awaiting an opportunity to get back into the close-knit community of the Seattle boating Industry.

Thank you all for your kind welcome - I am happy to consider myself to be part of an establishment with such a well-respected history and high ethical standards. I look forward to serving the members of the Northwest Yacht Brokers Association and contributing to the growth and profitability of the Seattle Boats Afloat show.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me – I’m available in the office, by email or by phone. I look forward to meeting NYBA’s many wonderful members – and hope to see you at our Winter Open House, January 11th!

New Hire and Winter Open House Announcement

We wanted to share an exciting update - NYBA has recently hired a new Director of Operations, Karli Houle. Karli will be starting shortly (stay tuned for an introduction email with her contact info and background!).

To celebrate Karli's hiring, as well as our brand new office space, we're inviting all of our NYBA members to a festive Winter Open House on January 11th, from 4-6pm. In light of this, we have also decided to cancel the original Holiday Party we had planned for mid-December. We know the holidays are very busy, and think a mid-January event will allow for greater attendance.

Plus - there will be multiple Lake Union Piers brokerages participating in the Winter Open House - so you will be able to stop into the new, permanent NYBA office as well as many other brokerage businesses here. Enjoy light bites, wine, beer, and cocktails; check out the new office space; say hello to your fellow NYBA members and meet Karli and the rest of the NYBA staff!

Analysis of Election Night Results - by Jim Hedrick

From NYBA Lobbyist Jim Hedrick - His thoughts on the November 8th 2022 general election results (Washington state):

"Democrats were not at risk of losing their majorities and as of this writing they will most likely expand their majorities in both the state Senate and state House.

The August primary was fresh off the Dobbs decision and Washington state progressive voters came out in force to vote for pro-choice candidates. In mid-October, The Seattle Times, King 5, the University of Washington’s Center for an Informed Public, and Washington State University’s Murrow College of Communications polled Washington voters on the issues most important to them looking ahead to November. Among those polled, abortion remained a top issue for Democrats, whereas inflation was most concerning to Republicans and Independents.

It is too soon to know, but these issues may not have brought voters out in droves. Voter turnout is low for a midterm general election. Compared to election day in 2018, there are approximately 500,000 more registered voters in Washington State. However, at current count, there are 300,000 fewer ballots returned than four years ago on this day. Perhaps voters waited until the last minute - we won’t know for a few more days.

By far the most expensive legislative race this year is the contest in the 26th (Kitsap County) between incumbent Senator Emily Randall (D-26) and challenger Representative Jesse Young (R-26). At this time, Randall leads the race with 52.53%. This race attracted nearly $2.5 million in independent expenditures and more than $1.6 million in campaign contributions. This race has not been the case of mealy-mouthed politicians vying for the middle, as these two candidates could not be more different or from more opposite sides of the political continuum. While Young is a conservative, anti-abortion republican, Randall is a very progressive, pro-choice Latina member of the LGBTQ community. Randall won the seat in 2018 by only 102 votes. In the House race for Young’s seat, Adison Richards (D) leads Spencer Hutchins (R) with 51.1%. Representative Michelle Caldier (R-26) leads challenger Matt Macklin with 54.87%.

In the August primary where Republicans had an overall lackluster night, they performed decently in the 42nd (Whatcom County). At this time, challenger Representative Sharon Shewmake (D-42) leads with 51.31% over appointed incumbent Senator Simon Sefzik (R-42). Independent expenditures in this race totaled more than $1.6 million. This seat nearly went Democrat four years ago when the late Senator Doug Ericksen (R-42) won by only 46 votes over his challenger. In the House, Representative Alicia Rule (D-42) is hanging on with 52.13% over Tawsha Dykstra Thompson. In Shewmake’s open seat, Joe Timmons (D) leads Dan Johnson (R) with 51.84%.

The 10th district (Island County) race between incumbent Representative Greg Gilday (R-10) and challenger Clyde Shavers (D) had an October Surprise when Shavers’ father released a bombshell letter accusing Shavers of gross misrepresentations about his military service, career and family. Media investigations confirmed Shavers is not a practicing attorney and misrepresented his military service, leading the Everett Herald to rescind their endorsement of Shavers. At this time, Shavers is in the lead with 52.68%. In the other House seat, Representative Dave Paul (D-10) is leading with 54.29 over Karen Lesetmoe (R).

Prior to the August primary, legislative Republicans had high hopes for flipping the 47th (South King County) back to an R district, but those dreams were squashed when their frontrunner House candidate, Carmen Goers finished fifth, leaving retired Representative Pat Sullivan’s (D-47) seat to two Democrats. Republican hope remained for the Senate seat of retiring Senator Mona Das (D-47), where Kent Council Member Bill Boyce (R) and former Senator Claudia Kauffman (D) faced off in the general election. At this point, Kauffman leads Boyce with 53.46%.

In recent weeks, legislative Republicans have spent a lot of time and resources in the 5th (East King County), hoping to unseat Representative Lisa Callan (D-5). The challenger is none other than former Representative Chad Magendanz (R), who received the Seattle Times endorsement over the incumbent. Magendanz served in the House of Representatives from 2013-17 and was the ranking minority member on Education. In 2016, he attempted to unseat Senator Mark Mullet (D-5) and lost. At this time, Callan is leading with 54.77%.

In Seattle’s 37th, two Democrats, Chipalo Street (D) and Emijah Smith (D) faced off for retiring Representative Kirsten Harris-Talley’s (D-37) seat. Street is a principal program manager in Microsoft’s Chief Technology Officer’s office, while Smith is the Chief of Staff at King County Equity Now, a pro-Black advocacy organization. At this time, Street leads with 54.40%.

In North Seattle, two Democrats again sparred to take the seat of Representative Javier Valdez (D-46) who will be moving on to the Senate come January to take retiring Senator David Frockt’s (D-46) seat. At this time, Darya Farivar (D), the policy director at Disability Rights Washington is leading with 55.94% over pediatrician Dr. Lelach Rave.

Two Republican incumbents are currently losing to Republican challengers. In the 4th (Spokane County), Leonard Christian (R) is beating Representative Rob Chase (R-4) with 50.82. Christian served for two months in 2014 upon the resignation of Representative Larry Crouse. And in the 39th (Snohomish County), Sam Low (R) is besting embattled Representative Robert Sutherland (R-39) with 55.14%.

At this time, Southwest Washington is producing close races. In the 17th, for the seat of retiring Representative Vicki Kraft (R-17), Skamania Economic Development Manager Kevin Waters (R) is leading ICU Nurse Terri Niles (D) with 50.87%. In the 18th in the contest for retiring Representative Brandon Vick’s (R-18) seat, teacher John Zingale (D) is leading Stephanie McClintock (R) with 50.67%. In the other 18th seat, that of retiring Representative Larry Hoff (R-18), Greg Cheney (R) leads ICU nurse Duncan Camacho with 51.52%.

In the Secretary of State race between appointed incumbent moderate Democrat Steve Hobbs and nonpartisan candidate Julie Anderson, Hobbs leads with 50.03% over Anderson’s 46.87%. Hobbs is the first person of color to serve in this position. A seasoned campaigner, Hobbs is also the first democrat to serve as Secretary of State since the appointment of republican Bruce Chapman in 1975. Washingtonians have consistently voted for republicans for this statewide office, even when republicans held no other statewide office. If elected, Anderson would be both the first woman and the first nonpartisan official in that position.

If vote counts were final at this time, Democrats would retain commanding control over the Governor’s mansion, the Senate, and the House. I will continue to update as the picture becomes more clear this week."
